Arbor and Pergola Contractor Vancouver
Once you've finished installing your custom made deck, there may be some other parts of your property that need some decorating or maybe adding a complementary piece to your deck. A great piece to add that will bring a little wow factor for guests is either an Arbor or Pergola. These names are used fairly interchangeably as the structures themselves can be quite similar. But there are distinct characteristics between the two and we want you to make sure you have an idea of which of these would be best for your property.
Let's start with the pergola. A pergola is typically larger than an arbor as it is made to fit over a deck or a patio and serve as an enclosure from the elements. The material of pergolas can be made from wood, vinyl, or metal and you can shade the space below through climbing plants, vines, or use covers like bamboo, linen, and shades. Pergolas can commonly be seen connected to another structure such as your house, a garage, or a backyard shed. You can also have a freestanding pergola constructed as well. A pergola is typically built with four our more posts/columns that act as the support for the structure itself. The roof of a pergola is made of equally spaced slats or beams that are crisscrossed to create a grid pattern. A lattice piece down the side creates a beautiful design that adds for privacy as well. The main purpose of installing a pergola is to create an outdoor environment that you can enjoy. It can have built in seating or seating that you put in afterwards. You can even have fixed lighting installed or hanging lights for some extra ambiance. A pergola is an outdoor living room so you can customize it however you like. An Arbor on the other hand is more of a designed seating area for your garden in your yard. The construction of an arbor is similar to a pergola but it is usually much smaller. At the highest level, you can think of a pergola as an outdoor room where an arbor is more of an outdoor doorway. In general arbors are freestanding but they can be attached to a fence on occasion. Some may come with gates which creates a secluded atmosphere for your garden. Our clients like to have a small seating area incorporated into the design. A traditional arbor will also have a crisscross or lattice design to allow for vines and climbing plants to be displayed around the arbor. An arbor can be made from wood, vinyl, and metal. Our team at Vancouver Deck Builders have built countless arbors and pergolas to alongside decks or as a stand alone build. It's a subtle structure on your property but it can really bring together the landscape when it is finished construction. If you are looking for a custom solution, give us a call for a free quote. |
